Important Tips for Promoting Literacy at Home
It is important for students to understand that literacy is vital for success in everyday life. Here are some tips you can use to help promote literacy in your home:
Read With Your Child
Take some time a few days a week to read with your child. It is important that they think reading is as important to you as you want it to be to them.
Ask Your Child About Their Reading
Check in with your child each day to find out what they are reading. Ask them to summarize their reading for you. This will help you stay up to date on their reading and it will help them pracitce important recall and summarizing strategies. In addition, ask students to make predictions about what will happen next. Ask them why they are making their predictions. Supporting their ideas is essential when asnwering important reading questions. Ask their opinion of their book and why they feel this way. It is important to promote critical thinking early.
Provide Opportunities For Children to Choose Books
Bring your child to the library often. It is important for them to have a choice in the books that they are reading.
Choosing "Just Right" Books
Encourage students to choose books that are "just right" for them. They can use the "5 Finger Rule". Students should choose a page in the book and read it. If the book has 5 or more words they struggle on then it is too hard. If there are no words that challenge them thent he book might be too easy.
Thank you for helping promote literacy in your child's life. They will be forever greatful!
